Learn the fundamentals of katana swordsmanship in a safe and beginner-friendly session
using an iaito (a non-sharpened practice sword), while experiencing authentic samurai
culture in Asakusa.
This experience is designed for first-time participants and focuses on correct posture,
movement, and mindset rather than strength or prior martial arts experience. Through
step-by-step instruction, you’ll explore the physical techniques and mental focus that
define traditional samurai training.
Welcome & Samurai Orientation
The session begins with an introduction to the samurai spirit, an overview of the
program, and essential safety instructions for handling the iaito. You’ll learn the
cultural background behind katana practice and how respect and awareness are central to
samurai training.
Samurai Etiquette & Posture Training
Learn how to stand, bow, breathe, and focus like a samurai. This section emphasizes
grounding the body, calming the mind, and developing proper posture as the foundation
for all movement.
Footwork & Body Alignment
Practice essential footwork techniques such as ayumi-ashi and tsugi-ashi, learning how
to move smoothly with balance and stability. Proper body alignment is introduced to help
you move efficiently and safely.
Katana Handling & Drawing Basics
Learn how to correctly hold the katana, draw it from the scabbard (nukitsuke), and
return it safely. This hands-on practice focuses on control, awareness, and smooth
motion.
Fundamental Cutting Movements
Practice basic cutting forms, angles, and coordination between the body, feet, and
sword. You’ll combine footwork and sword movement while maintaining correct form and
balance.
Beginner Iai Sequence & Photo Time
Finish by learning a simple beginner-level iai kata that combines drawing, cutting, and
re-sheathing into one flowing sequence. Afterward, enjoy samurai-style photo and video
time to capture your experience.
This immersive yet approachable session offers a meaningful introduction to Japanese sword culture, blending physical practice with historical and philosophical insight.
