Details

Experience Japanese calligraphy in a quiet studio near Zoshigaya Station. Guided by Akiko, an attentive and encouraging instructor.

The session begins with simple brush exercises to get familiar with handling a fude (calligraphy brush). Akiko provides gentle feedback as you practice drawing lines and basic characters. Once you are comfortable, you will choose the characters that represent your name and practice writing them at your own pace.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll create a final piece on a shikishi board, which you can take home as a personal keepsake from your trip.

Guest requirements

Guests ages 12 and up can attend, up to 4 guests total.

Important Notes

1. Please provide the instructor with your name and pronunciation in advance.
2. Calligraphy involves permanent ink that can sometimes splatter. Please make sure to wear clothes you don’t mind get slightly dirty in
3. Access to the workshop on the first floor is via a small, narrow staircase.

This experience is hosted in English and French.

Reviews

A warm and well-prepared workshop where Akiko guided everyone to improve quickly and create a unique calligraphy souvenir.

Our first calligraphy experience was fascinating thanks to Akiko, who explained the history and meaning behind kanji in an engaging way.

Akiko was super supportive and tried to accommodate all our needs — even the unforeseen ones. Her friendliness is part of what makes Japan so remarkable.

A patient and caring host who helped everyone create calligraphy they could be proud of—highly recommended.
